His jokes, and I use the term loosely, are nothing more than observational rants by someone who is spastic like a 13 year old with ADHD. If you have not attended one of his shows, Comedy Central often airs his specials and they typically consist of him pacing, making loud noises, exaggerated gestures, and voices for an hour or two.
Although his 2005 comedy cd/dvd Retaliation went double platinum, Dane Cook in no way has shown he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as other best-selling comedians such as Bill Cosby,George Carlin, and Steve Martin. How he was able to go double platinum is still a mystery considering multiple comics including Louis CK have labeled him a joke thief on more than one occasion.
In 2008 Cook broke the record for longest comedy performance previously held by Richard Pryor and more recently Dave Chappelle by performing on stage for 7 hours. We still have our top men working round the clock to determine how anyone could stand to watch or listen to him perform for 7 hours without their heads exploding ala Scanners.
Despite all the evidence to the contrary, countless “That Guy” still find Dane Cook funny. They vehemently defend him comedic “genius” even in the face of such movies Employee of the Month, Good Luck Chuck, and My Best Friend’s Girl. He is omnipresent and quoted on college campuses nationwide by “That Guy.” They claim he is edgy; however, based on the number of movies and tv appearances he does then he is the most mainstream “edgy” we’ve ever encountered in the history of world.
If you like Dane Cook or are Dane Cook, then it’s just too easy: you are “That Guy.”
